From April 2026, the Welsh Government plans to introduce a new NHS dental contract.

While these changes are intended to improve access for the wider population, they may affect the care you receive — including how often you’re seen, where you’re treated, and who treats you.

Here’s what these changes could mean for you and your family:

❗ What’s Changing?

No More Patient Registration

If your mouth is “stable”, you’ll be placed on a central NHS waiting list — with no check-ups until you come to the top of the list again.

No Guarantee You’ll Return to Us

You could be sent to any NHS practice in your health board, not the one one you’ve attended for years.

No Shared Records

Your notes and x-rays won’t transfer — you’ll start from scratch at every new practice. The new dentist will have no access to your history — making it harder to monitor long-term conditions like gum disease, tooth wear, or recession.

Higher NHS Costs

Treatment fees may increase. Exams suggested to rise to £25.40, with treatment fees up to £384.

😟 Who’s Most at Risk?

* Children and nervous patients who need consistent, familiar care

* Long-term NHS patients who value regular check-ups

* Anyone who wants to stay with a trusted dental team

We’ll always do our best for our patients — but these changes make it harder for everyone.

📣 What Can You Do?

The Welsh Government is asking for public feedback which is open until 19th June.

Have your say before it’s too late.

As Invisalign providers, we at Y Bont Faen Dental Centre have always been proud to offer this revolutionary teeth straightening system to our patients. Recently, as one of the top Invisalign providers, we had the privilege of visiting the Invisalign factory—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that not only deepened our appreciation for the brand but also gave us invaluable insight into why Invisalign truly is the gold standard for clear aligners.

From the moment we stepped into the facility, we were awestruck by the sheer scale and sophistication of the operation. Invisalign produces billions of aligners every year, and witnessing this process firsthand was nothing short of incredible. Every step of the journey, from the initial scans to the final product, is meticulously organized. The precision and attention to detail behind each aligner reaffirmed why Invisalign is known for its reliability and consistent results.

The Power of Science and Innovation

One of the highlights of our visit was learning about the groundbreaking science behind Invisalign. This isn’t just about creating a clear aligner—it’s about designing a tool that seamlessly integrates biomechanics, digital technology, and years of research to deliver predictable and efficient results.

Each aligner is custom-made using advanced 3D printing technology, ensuring that every tooth movement is planned and executed with precision. With over 18 million smiles transformed globally, their data-driven approach allows them to improve outcomes with every new patient.

We were also given an in-depth look at how Invisalign’s SmartTrack material sets it apart. Unlike other clear aligners, this patented material is designed to apply gentle, constant force, making it not only more comfortable for patients but also more effective at achieving desired tooth movements. The difference is tangible, and it’s a key reason why Invisalign is such a trusted system among dental professionals worldwide and why we wouldn’t use anything else.

It is important to us that if you embark on treatment we want you to have a seamless experience and Invisalign helps us to do that.

Efficiency on a Global Scale

Another revelation during our tour was the sheer efficiency of Invisalign’s operation. Every aligner set is a masterpiece of logistics, with timelines that ensure patients receive their trays promptly. Watching the process unfold, it became clear why Invisalign leads the industry—they’ve mastered the art of scalability without sacrificing quality.

From the initial digital scans we take at Y Bont Faen Dental Centre to the moment those aligners arrive at our practice, every detail is part of a well-oiled machine. This efficiency gives us, as providers, confidence that our patients are in the best hands.

A Renewed Passion for Transforming Smiles

Our visit to the Invisalign factory left us inspired and proud to be part of this transformative journey. It reaffirmed why we trust Invisalign for our patients: the combination of cutting-edge technology, scientific innovation, reliability and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

We also had chance to connect with a great group of other top providers from the UK, all sharing advice to learn from each other to help improve our practice for our patients, and a trip to the Wroclaw Christmas market too!

At Y Bont Faen Dental Centre, we’re not just offering aligners—we’re providing a pathway to better confidence, oral health, and smiles that last a lifetime. After witnessing the magic behind the scenes, we’re more excited than ever to bring this incredible system to you.

Here’s to the future of smile transformation, powered by Invisalign—and delivered with care, precision, and passion by us at Y Bont Faen Dental Centre.

If you’re considering Invisalign or want to learn more about how it works, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’d love to share our knowledge and help you take the first step toward your dream smile!

1. Establish a Consistent Oral Care Routine
Mornings can be busy, and late nights filled with homework or extracurriculars can lead to rushed routines but start as you mean to go on and make sure your child is brushing for two minutes, twice a day.

Nutrition plays a huge role in oral health. Opt for tooth-friendly snacks like:

When it comes to maintaining a bright, healthy smile, your choice of toothpaste plays a crucial role. At Y Bont Faen Dental Centre, we believe that fluoride toothpaste is one of the most effective tools in your dental care arsenal. But what exactly makes fluoride so beneficial, and why should it be a staple in your daily routine? Let’s dive into the science and benefits of fluoride toothpaste.

What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in various water sources, certain foods, and the earth’s crust. For decades, fluoride has been recognized for its ability to prevent tooth decay, which is why it’s commonly added to public water supplies and dental care products like toothpaste and mouthwash.

How Does Fluoride Work?

Fluoride works in two primary ways to protect your teeth:

1. Strengthening Tooth Enamel: The outer layer of your teeth, known as enamel, is the first line of defense against tooth decay. Fluoride strengthens enamel by helping to remineralize it, making it more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in your mouth.

2. Preventing Tooth Decay: Fluoride helps to slow down or even reverse the early stages of tooth decay. It does this by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria in your mouth and encouraging the remineralization of your enamel.

Why Choose Fluoride Toothpaste?

Here are some compelling reasons why fluoride toothpaste should be your go-to choice:

– Proven Effectiveness: Countless studies have shown that fluoride toothpaste significantly reduces the risk of tooth decay. This is why fluoride is endorsed by dental associations worldwide.

– Daily Protection: Every time you brush with fluoride toothpaste, you’re giving your teeth a mini-treatment that helps protect against decay. This is especially important after meals when acids from food and drinks can weaken your enamel.

– Safe for All Ages: Fluoride toothpaste is safe for adults and children when used as directed, be careful to not let children swallow to much.

Tips for Using Fluoride Toothpaste Effectively

To get the most out of your fluoride toothpaste, follow these simple tips:

– Brush Twice a Day: Make sure to brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day, ideally after breakfast and before bedtime.

– Use the Right Amount: Adults should use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, while children under six should use a smaller, grain-of-rice-sized amount and under three’s use a smear.

– Spit, Don’t Rinse: After brushing, spit out the excess toothpaste but avoid rinsing your mouth with water. This allows the fluoride to stay on your teeth longer, providing more protection.

– Pair with Regular Dental Visits: While fluoride toothpaste is powerful, it’s not a substitute for professional dental care. Be sure to visit us at Y Bont Faen Dental Centre regularly for check-ups and cleanings.

Feel free to contact Y Bont Faen Dental Centre to schedule an appointment or learn more about our dental services. We look forward to helping you keep your smile spectacular for life!

Summer is a time for fun, relaxation, and indulging in seasonal treats. While enjoying your favorite summer snacks, it’s essential to be mindful of their impact on your oral health. Some foods can promote a healthy smile, while others might cause harm. In this blog post, we’ll explore the best and worst summer foods for your teeth, helping you make informed choices for a healthy and happy smile.

Best Foods for Your Teeth

1. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
– Apples, Carrots, and Celery: These crunchy fruits and veggies act as natural toothbrushes, helping to clean teeth and stimulate gums.
– Strawberries: Packed with vitamin C and malic acid, strawberries can help whiten teeth naturally and boost gum health.

2. Dairy Products
– Cheese: Rich in calcium and phosphate, cheese helps neutralize acid in the mouth, strengthens tooth enamel, and produces saliva to wash away food particles.
– Yogurt: Contains probiotics that can benefit your gums and is high in calcium for strong teeth.

3. Nuts and Seeds
– Almonds and Sesame Seeds: These are great sources of calcium and protein, which are essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

4. Water
– Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health and oral hygiene. Water helps rinse away food particles and bacteria, maintaining saliva production which protects your teeth from decay.

Worst Foods for Your Teeth

1. Sugary Snacks and Drinks
– Fizzy drinks and Sports Drinks: High in sugar and acid, these beverages can erode tooth enamel and lead to cavities.
– Sweets and Ice Cream: Sticky and sugary treats like gummy candies, caramel, and even ice cream can linger on your teeth, providing a breeding ground for bacteria and plaque.

2. Citrus Fruits
– Lemons, Oranges, and Grapefruits: While nutritious, the high acid content in citrus fruits can erode enamel if consumed in excess. Rinse your mouth with water after eating citrus to minimize the acid’s effect.

3. Dried Fruits
– Raisins and Dried Apricots: Although they might seem healthy, dried fruits are sticky and high in sugar, which can cling to teeth and cause decay.

4. Alcohol
– Wine and Cocktails: Alcohol can dry out your mouth, reducing saliva production and increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Fruit juices and alcohol also often contain those harmful sugars! Darker drinks like red wine can also stain your teeth.

Tips for Protecting Your Teeth This Summer

1. Moderation is Key: Enjoy your favorite treats in moderation to reduce the risk of damage to your teeth.
2. Rinse and Brush: After consuming sugary or acidic foods and drinks, rinse your mouth with water and wait 30 minutes before brushing to protect your enamel.
3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your mouth clean and maintain healthy saliva levels.
4. Choose Healthy Alternatives: Opt for healthier snacks like fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts to satisfy your cravings without harming your teeth.

Enjoying summer treats doesn’t have to come at the expense of your dental health. By making mindful choices and practicing good oral hygiene, you can indulge in your favorite snacks while keeping your smile bright and healthy. Remember, a little care goes a long way in maintaining your oral health all summer long.

Has summer finally arrived?

Summer is the season of sunshine, beach days, and outdoor fun. However, with the increased exposure to sunlight comes a heightened risk of skin cancer. As you take steps to protect your dental health, it’s equally important to safeguard your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Here’s how you can enjoy the summer safely while minimizing your risk of skin cancer.

1. Understand the Risks

Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. The primary cause is ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can damage the DNA in your skin cells, potentially leading to cancer. Understanding the risks is the first step in protecting yourself.

2. Use Sunscreen Effectively

One of the most effective ways to protect your skin is by using sunscreen. Here are some tips to ensure you’re using it correctly:
– Choose Broad-Spectrum: Select a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
– SPF Matters: Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Higher SPFs provide more protection, but no sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays.
– Apply Generously: Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to all exposed skin. Don’t forget often-missed spots like your ears, neck, and the tops of your feet.
– Reapply Often: Reapply every two hours, and immediately after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.

3. Seek Shade

Whenever possible, stay in the shade, especially during the peak sun intensity hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Shade can significantly reduce your exposure to UV radiation.

4. Wear Protective Clothing

Clothing can provide a physical barrier against UV rays. Consider the following:
– Long-Sleeved Shirts and Pants: Opt for lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants to cover as much skin as possible.
– Hats: Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, ears, and neck.
– Sunglasses: Choose sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays to protect your eyes and the surrounding skin.

5. Be Cautious Around Water and Sand

Water and sand can reflect and intensify the sun’s rays, increasing your risk of sunburn. Ensure you apply extra sunscreen and take additional protective measures when spending time at the beach or pool.

6. Avoid Tanning Beds

Tanning beds emit UV radiation that can be even more harmful than the sun. Avoiding tanning beds altogether is crucial in reducing your risk of skin cancer.

7. Perform Regular Skin Checks

Regularly examining your skin for any changes can help detect skin cancer early. Look for new growths, moles that have changed in size or color, or any unusual skin changes. If you notice anything suspicious, consult a dermatologist promptly.

8. Stay Hydrated and Maintain Healthy Skin

Keeping your skin hydrated can enhance its ability to repair itself. Drink plenty of water, and use moisturizers to maintain your skin’s health and resilience against UV damage.

9. Educate Your Family and Friends

Spread awareness about the importance of skin protection. Encourage your loved ones to adopt sun-safe habits to prevent skin cancer.

Protecting your skin from cancer involves a combination of awareness, preventative measures, and regular monitoring. By following these guidelines, you can enjoy the summer sun safely while minimizing your risk of skin cancer. Remember, taking care of your skin is just as important as maintaining your dental health – both contribute to your overall well-being. Did you know that a Dentist always carries out a visual assessment of your skin on your head and neck? We are always checking even if you don’t realise it!

Stay safe, enjoy the summer, and don’t forget your sunscreen!

It’s that time of the year again! National Smile Month is just around the corner, and here at Y Bont Faen Dental Centre, we’re gearing up to celebrate one of the UK’s most beloved campaigns promoting oral health. From 13th May to 13th June 2024, the Oral Health Foundation will be leading the way, spreading awareness about the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene and the joy of sporting a healthy smile.

At Y Bont Faen Dental Centre, we’re passionate about dental care and the impact it has on overall well-being. National Smile Month aligns with our mission to provide high quality dental treatment while educating the Cowbridge community about oral health. This year, we’re thrilled to be part of the nationwide effort to inspire healthier smiles.

Maintaining a healthy mouth doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are 3 simple tips from Dr Lara Welch:

Brush Regularly: Make it a habit to brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day using fluoride toothpaste. This helps remove plaque, prevent cavities, and keep your breath fresh.

Watch Your Sugar Intake: Sugary foods and drinks can wreak havoc on your teeth, leading to decay and other dental issues. Cut down on sugary snacks and beverages to protect your pearly whites.

Schedule Regular Dental Check-ups: Visiting your dentist regularly is crucial for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist can spot early signs of problems, provide professional cleanings, and offer personalised advice for optimal dental care.

As we gear up for National Smile Month, let’s commit to prioritising our oral health and spreading smiles everywhere we go.

How to Get Involved in National Smile Month

As the weather warms and nature blooms, let’s ensure your smile is just as vibrant and healthy.

Here are some top tips from Dr Lara Welch to help you “spring clean” your dental routine:

Replace Your Toothbrush: It’s recommended to swap out your toothbrush or brush head every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles start to fray or if you’ve been under the weather. When was the last time you refreshed yours?

Here are some additional pointers:

Never share your toothbrush.

Store toothbrushes upright to allow for faster air-drying.

Rinse your brush thoroughly with tap water after each use.

Keep an eye on children’s toothbrushes; they may need replacing more frequently if the bristles start to wear out.

Schedule a Dental Visit: While you’re tackling your spring-cleaning checklist, don’t forget to schedule dental checkups for yourself and your family.

Brighten Your Smile: If you’ve noticed your smile looking a bit sad lately, now is the ideal moment to discuss whitening options with your dentist. Whether you prefer in-surgery treatments or at-home solutions, a refreshed smile can help to boost confidence.

Improving your dental health routine is simple and rewarding. By incorporating these quick and easy steps—such as using a new toothbrush, exploring different floss options, and scheduling a dental checkup – you can achieve a bright healthy smile.

Dr Nathan Welch has summarised the points to consider before going ahead with Invisalign at Y Bont Faen Dental Centre.

Invisalign is Suitable for All Ages:
Whether you’re a child, teenager, or adult, Invisalign offers a clear alternative to traditional braces.

Fast and Efficient Results:
Many individuals notice visible improvements in just three months. After your initial consultation, our Invisalign provider will scan your teeth and send the records to Invisalign, where a computerised simulation showcases your potential post-treatment results.

Preview Your Smile Transformation:
Before commencing treatment, you’ll have the opportunity to review the simulated outcome of your Invisalign treatment during a brief appointment. This allows you to make an informed decision about proceeding with the treatment.

Some Patients May Require “Buttons”:
As part of your treatment plan, some patients may require small, tooth-coloured attachments known as “buttons” to facilitate tooth movement. These buttons aid in expediting the alignment process.

Expect Possible Discomfort:
Discomfort levels vary among individuals and may depend on factors such as tooth alignment and pain tolerance. Some individuals report discomfort during treatment, while others do not.

Regular Appointments Are Necessary:
Throughout your treatment, you’ll need to visit the orthodontic practice every 3-8 weeks to receive your next set of aligners, ensuring the treatment progresses smoothly.

Convenient Teeth Whitening Option:
With Invisalign aligners worn throughout the day, you have the opportunity to apply whitening gel to achieve a brighter smile simultaneously. This concurrent whitening option can enhance your smile transformation.

Commitment to Retainer Wear:
Upon completing your Invisalign treatment, you’ll receive a final retainer to maintain the alignment of your teeth. Consistent nightly wear of the retainer is crucial to prevent teeth from shifting. Additionally, we offer a fixed retainer option at no extra charge for those who prefer it.
