<p>Mouth Cancer Action Month runs throughout November and is an annual campaign organised by the British Dental Health Foundation to help raise awareness of the signs and those most at risk.</p>
<p>As well as educating the public about mouth cancer it is also about increasing knowledge within clinical professions. Mouth cancer rates are on the rise; here at Y Bont Faen we recognise that early detection is crucial to increasing survival.</p>
<p>Performing mouth scanning is routine here at Y Bont Faen on all patients at every check, every time a patient visits the practice but the patient perhaps doesn’t know why we are doing it. We inform and educate all our patients.</p>
<p>It is important to visit your dentist for regular check-ups as a dentist can help identify the early signs of mouth cancer.</p>
<p>There are several key risks and warning signs that have been identified in increasing the chances of mouth cancer:</p>

<p><strong>Did you know there is a strong connection between your dental health and your mental health?</strong> The following being some of the signs and symptoms: gum disease, bruxism, mouth ulcers, chipped or cracked teeth, stained yellow teeth&#8230;</p>
<p>For example, if your gums are bleeding and are inflamed, they could be indicating more than a simple linear story of poor hygiene. You could be suffering from periodontal – advanced gum diseases which in turn could be a warning sign for other diseases like diabetes, blood-pressure, heart disease, pneumonia, lung disease and osteoporosis.</p>
<p>Here are five signs that you may be grinding your teeth:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Worn or Flattened Teeth</strong>: Teeth that are flat, chipped, or excessively worn down can be a clear indication of teeth grinding.</li>
<li><strong>Jaw Pain or Tension</strong>: Frequent jaw pain, tightness, or discomfort, especially in the mornings, may be a sign of clenching or grinding during sleep.</li>
<li><strong>Headaches</strong>: Regular, unexplained headaches, especially in the temples or the sides of your face, can be a consequence of teeth grinding.</li>
<li><strong>Tooth Sensitivity</strong>: Increased sensitivity in your teeth to hot, cold, or sweet foods and beverages may result from the enamel erosion caused by grinding.</li>
<li><strong>Chronic Facial Pain</strong>: Grinding can lead to chronic facial pain, which may manifest as earaches, jaw pain, or discomfort in the facial muscles.</li>
</ol>
<p>If you suspect you are grinding your teeth, it&#8217;s essential to consult a dentist. We can diagnose the issue and recommend treatments like a nightguard to protect your teeth and alleviate the symptoms.</p>

<p>It has hit home to me how important it is for my patients to know about oral cancer so they can help reduce their risk factors and make sure they attend for their examinations. At every examination a dentist will carry out an Oral Health Screen, this should be done at a minimum once a year.</p>

<p>Oral cancer refers to a group of malignancies that affect the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palates, sinuses, and throat.</p>

<p>Several risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing oral cancer. <p>c) <strong>Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Infection</strong>: Certain strains of HPV have been linked to oral cancer.</p>
