From April 2026, the Welsh Government plans to introduce a new NHS dental contract.

While these changes are intended to improve access for the wider population, they may affect the care you receive — including how often you’re seen, where you’re treated, and who treats you.

Here’s what these changes could mean for you and your family:

• No More Patient Registration

If your mouth is “stable”, you’ll be placed on a central NHS waiting list — with no check-ups until you come to the top of the list again.

• No Guarantee You’ll Return to Us

You could be sent to any NHS practice in your health board, not the one one you’ve attended for years.

• No Shared Records

Your notes and x-rays won’t transfer — you’ll start from scratch at every new practice. The new dentist will have no access to your history — making it harder to monitor long-term conditions like gum disease, tooth wear, or recession.

• Higher NHS Costs

Treatment fees may increase. Exams suggested to rise to £25.40, with treatment fees up to £384.

We have had a new reception desk built which gives the staff more space for working, more space for their little notes about all your treatments and enquiries!

We decided not to go for the traditional high desk, we no longer get patients to sign paper documents as we have gone paperless in an effort to help the environment, everything is now signed on tablets. Once we decided there wasn’t a need for somewhere to rest it was an easy choice to have the lovely team able to see our patients. They love to chat to everybody who comes in and now they can do so while seeing their faces.

The rest of the practice has had a paint job, making it brighter and lighter and some new floors to bring it up to date.

Our waiting room videos have also been brought up to date with our new branding and show the latest information about the practice, oral health advice and treatments we offer.

We are just waiting on the new waiting chairs which should be coming this week.

“Spectacular Smiles For Life”

Almost two years ago we took over Y Bont Faen Dental Centre (then surgery) and we knew that the first thing we needed was a new logo and colour scheme.

We enlisted our friend and amazing graphic designer @goldfox. We wanted something that was bright, fun and friendly as we are. I think he hit the nail on the head and produced a logo and bold colour scheme that was just what we asked for and we loved it.

There was also a hidden message inside which nobody but us knew – the initials YBF as you can see. This made it even better to us.

Fast forward 18 months and with a lot more experience in business and branding and we realised that maybe we were selling ourself short. We ARE a fun and friendly team and we still want patients to enjoy coming to see us (yes it is possible) and to feel relaxed, but we are also much more.

We enlisted the help of branding experts @jaynespronson and @kimmartin to help on our journey and discovered a lot along the way.

It started with a discovery day to delve into our business, our ethos and our values. From this we could discover our purpose, our vision and our mission.

After discovering these truths we could work out what we stand for, our core values.

Jayne and Kim developed our ONLY statement. We were shocked to find that they did not think this was true of all dental practices, with their experience of working with many. It is so important to us to help patients have life long healthy smiles, this is more about what is done at home than what we can do. All we can do is give our patients the tools to help themselves.

So far we were thrilled with the process and enjoyed putting into words the way we had always felt. It was also useful that Nathan and myself have similar values and ethos towards our patients.

Next was the hard bit. To look at our colours and logo. We were very attached to our current branding and were reluctant to change it. Also having only recently had our signs changed we did not want to branch to far from what we already had.

It was fun understanding what the different colours of branding stood for, something I had never known before but now I notice it everywhere. It was difficult to decide where we were as there were elements of different archetypes and we had to decide what was most important for us to emulate.

We obviously are caregivers but that is assumed in our profession – blue. We also want everybody to feel comfortable and relaxed – purples. We decided however that our overiding features were that of the Magician, Hero and Sage.

“We provide a caring service to our patients with the power of understanding to help them achieve mastery of their health. We create the structure that will lead to a legacy of fulfilment in our community.”

We came to this new group of colours. It took time to come round to our new colours as we were so invested in the previous ones but we now love them! I feel it does represent us in a way our previous ones did not. Get ready to see them in everything we do!

Finally we have updated our logo to better reflect our new personality. Again we loved our previous one so much that we will still be using it as a secondary logo but have a new evolved version. We loved our previous “sparkle” which was meant to represent the shine on healthy teeth but we have evolved this to also be like a guiding star, as we educate and guide people towards dental health.

So now we move forward with a new year, a new logo and a new look!

We are also starting to carry out some renovations to the practice and have a new website coming in the spring! More to come on these…

Last March Nathan and Lara took over the practice with the goal of growing the business to allow more patients to be looked after under our care. We also had visions of going more digital to help the environment. Lets take a look at some of the changes that have happened and the lessons we’ve learnt!

Improvements at the practice

Digital changes

When we took over the practice if had no online presence and the only method of communication was via phone, which with one receptionist trying to do all meant it was very difficult to reach us.

The first thing we did was to get a website up and running which allowed our community to know who we were and what we provided. It also allowed us to move into the 21st century by being contactable via email and WhatsApp.

We are proud of the website which Lara built herself so we could get it available quickly but know its limitations and will hopefully be getting some improvements later this year.

We also now have a patient portal and tablets in practice to update patient information on, helping us achieve our paperless aim.

We have started providing Implants at the practice which is great as previously patients would have to be referred elsewhere, a great service if needed.

Last year we invested in an oral scanner. This is amazing for monitoring your dental tissues, being able to compare things like recession and dental erosion to time elapsed, allowing us to work out how quickly problems are occurring. It is also a game changer with our Invisalign tooth straightening cases, no longer needing to take impressions and improving turn around time.

Staff changes

Victoria Bentley started with us in October, a dental Therapist. She can carry out all hygienist treatments but also routine fillings, decreasing the waiting time for patients from almost 3 months on NHS to only a few weeks. Patients have also loved her!

We also recently took on more desk staff, the lovely Sarah and Diane, to help Jane (even though she was super woman to be doing it herself for so long!) We hope now that it should be much easier to get through to us on the phone and reduced waiting times stood at reception to make your appointments.

Finally we have 2 new dentists at the practice allowing us to increase the patients who can be seen, the wonderful Susan and Fran. Susan has a special interest in care of nervous patients and is soon hoping to train in sedation and Fran will be carrying out routine and cosmetic dentistry, she loves to improve your smiles!

Lessons Learnt

Lesson 1 – running a dental practice is hard work

We definitely have had a steep learning curve this year. Lara had some concept of running a business from being brought up around her parents running their hair salons but the reality of staffing, sorting facilities and finances took a lot of getting our heads round and I think we are nearly there now.

Add to that the compliance matters of working in healthcare and it can be a big headache! It has also been a very rewarding challenge, however, and nice to tackle something new. Also watching all the changes we put into place have a positive impact is very exciting.

Lesson 2 – change takes time

When we took over we were desperate to make physical changes also such as new branding and logo (to put our stamp on it), new signs and update the practice interiors. For various reasons this has been a slow process and frustrating at times. Fingers crossed we should get there in the next year!

With every improvement we have made we have had to consider the timing well to ensure staff and patients are ready.

Lesson 3 – our team is amazing!

We always knew we had a good team but through this year they have been our best asset. All happy to help each other and us, making our lives easier and always making our patients smile!

Concluding

We have had an amazing year learning with a new business (and a new baby!) and always trying to keep our vision in mind, to be known as the practice who gives our Community the skills and opportunity to have healthy, happy smiles.

We look forward to working on the practice for our patients for many years to come!
