From April 2026, the Welsh Government plans to introduce a new NHS dental contract.

While these changes are intended to improve access for the wider population, they may affect the care you receive — including how often you’re seen, where you’re treated, and who treats you.

Here’s what these changes could mean for you and your family:

❗ What’s Changing?

No More Patient Registration

If your mouth is “stable”, you’ll be placed on a central NHS waiting list — with no check-ups until you come to the top of the list again.

No Guarantee You’ll Return to Us

You could be sent to any NHS practice in your health board, not the one one you’ve attended for years.

No Shared Records

Your notes and x-rays won’t transfer — you’ll start from scratch at every new practice. The new dentist will have no access to your history — making it harder to monitor long-term conditions like gum disease, tooth wear, or recession.

Higher NHS Costs

Treatment fees may increase. Exams suggested to rise to £25.40, with treatment fees up to £384.

😟 Who’s Most at Risk?

* Children and nervous patients who need consistent, familiar care

* Long-term NHS patients who value regular check-ups

* Anyone who wants to stay with a trusted dental team

We’ll always do our best for our patients — but these changes make it harder for everyone.

📣 What Can You Do?

The Welsh Government is asking for public feedback which is open until 19th June.

Have your say before it’s too late.

We are updating!

We understand the importance in keeping up with the latest innovations and techniques in dentistry and with that sometimes we need to modernise. We are always investing to ensure you have the best experience and outcomes. With that in mind we have some up coming changes to update you about!

1. Internal Surgery Upgrade & Temporary Disruptions

We are excited to announce the addition of a brand-new Surgery 4 and the installation of a CBCT machine to enhance patient care and diagnostic capabilities.

This means:

– Improved treatment options with fewer external referrals.

– A better overall patient experience.

However, during the construction phase, there may be increased noise, occasional appointment changes, and longer wait times due to having one less surgery in operation. We appreciate your cooperation as we work to improve our services.

2. External Building Work & Access Disruptions

Due to necessary maintenance on our older building, scaffolding will be erected, which may make access to the practice more difficult. During the setup and removal of the scaffolding, the disabled ramp may be temporarily unavailable. We will do our best to minimize disruptions, but as we may receive little notice of these works, some appointments may need to be rescheduled. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

We understand these changes may cause some inconvenience, but we are committed to making your experience at our practice even better. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

I will do a blog to show the new surgery when it is finished! Watch this space!

As Invisalign providers, we at Y Bont Faen Dental Centre have always been proud to offer this revolutionary teeth straightening system to our patients. Recently, as one of the top Invisalign providers, we had the privilege of visiting the Invisalign factory—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that not only deepened our appreciation for the brand but also gave us invaluable insight into why Invisalign truly is the gold standard for clear aligners.

From the moment we stepped into the facility, we were awestruck by the sheer scale and sophistication of the operation. Invisalign produces billions of aligners every year, and witnessing this process firsthand was nothing short of incredible. Every step of the journey, from the initial scans to the final product, is meticulously organized. The precision and attention to detail behind each aligner reaffirmed why Invisalign is known for its reliability and consistent results.

The Power of Science and Innovation

One of the highlights of our visit was learning about the groundbreaking science behind Invisalign. This isn’t just about creating a clear aligner—it’s about designing a tool that seamlessly integrates biomechanics, digital technology, and years of research to deliver predictable and efficient results.

Each aligner is custom-made using advanced 3D printing technology, ensuring that every tooth movement is planned and executed with precision. With over 18 million smiles transformed globally, their data-driven approach allows them to improve outcomes with every new patient.

We were also given an in-depth look at how Invisalign’s SmartTrack material sets it apart. Unlike other clear aligners, this patented material is designed to apply gentle, constant force, making it not only more comfortable for patients but also more effective at achieving desired tooth movements. The difference is tangible, and it’s a key reason why Invisalign is such a trusted system among dental professionals worldwide and why we wouldn’t use anything else.

It is important to us that if you embark on treatment we want you to have a seamless experience and Invisalign helps us to do that.

Efficiency on a Global Scale

Another revelation during our tour was the sheer efficiency of Invisalign’s operation. Every aligner set is a masterpiece of logistics, with timelines that ensure patients receive their trays promptly. Watching the process unfold, it became clear why Invisalign leads the industry—they’ve mastered the art of scalability without sacrificing quality.

From the initial digital scans we take at Y Bont Faen Dental Centre to the moment those aligners arrive at our practice, every detail is part of a well-oiled machine. This efficiency gives us, as providers, confidence that our patients are in the best hands.

A Renewed Passion for Transforming Smiles

Our visit to the Invisalign factory left us inspired and proud to be part of this transformative journey. It reaffirmed why we trust Invisalign for our patients: the combination of cutting-edge technology, scientific innovation, reliability and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

We also had chance to connect with a great group of other top providers from the UK, all sharing advice to learn from each other to help improve our practice for our patients, and a trip to the Wroclaw Christmas market too!

At Y Bont Faen Dental Centre, we’re not just offering aligners—we’re providing a pathway to better confidence, oral health, and smiles that last a lifetime. After witnessing the magic behind the scenes, we’re more excited than ever to bring this incredible system to you.

Here’s to the future of smile transformation, powered by Invisalign—and delivered with care, precision, and passion by us at Y Bont Faen Dental Centre.

If you’re considering Invisalign or want to learn more about how it works, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’d love to share our knowledge and help you take the first step toward your dream smile!

November is Mouth Cancer Action Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about mouth cancer, promoting early detection, and encouraging people to take proactive steps toward prevention and treatment. Mouth cancer, also known as oral cancer, is a serious condition that affects thousands of people worldwide. Early diagnosis can save lives, yet the awareness and conversation around mouth cancer are still far from where they need to be. Let’s dive into why this month matters, what to look for, and how you can take action to protect yourself and others.

Why Mouth Cancer Awareness Matters
Mouth cancer affects the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, and even the roof or floor of the mouth. According to the Oral Health Foundation, mouth cancer cases have risen by over 50% in the past decade alone, with nearly 8,000 new cases annually in the UK. These numbers highlight the need for increased awareness and early intervention.

Risk Factors of Mouth Cancer
Mouth cancer can affect anyone, but certain lifestyle factors can increase the risk, including:

– Tobacco Use: Both smoking and smokeless tobacco are leading causes of oral cancers.
– Excessive Alcohol Consumption: Heavy alcohol use, particularly in combination with smoking, compounds the risk.
– HPV (Human Papillomavirus): Certain strains of HPV, commonly spread through oral contact, are associated with a higher risk of mouth cancer.
– Poor Diet: Diets low in fruits and vegetables may increase the likelihood of developing mouth cancer.
– Excessive Sun Exposure: For cancers of the lips, prolonged sun exposure is a risk factor.

Signs and Symptoms to Look Out For
One of the biggest challenges with mouth cancer is that symptoms can often be mistaken for less serious conditions. Here are some signs to keep in mind:

– Persistent sores or ulcers that do not heal within two weeks
– Red or white patches on the inside of the mouth or tongue
– Swelling, lumps, or thick

If you’ve ever woken up with a sore jaw, experienced frequent headaches, or noticed worn-down teeth, you might be one of the many who unconsciously grind or clench their teeth, especially at night.

Bruxism can have serious long-term effects on dental health, but the good news is that raising awareness can lead to better prevention, management, and treatment.

What Is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth, usually during sleep (sleep bruxism) but also while awake (awake bruxism). This habit may not only damage your teeth but can also lead to jaw pain, headaches, earaches, and even disrupted sleep. Many people may be unaware of their condition until a dentist identifies the symptoms, which makes awareness crucial.

Common Symptoms of Bruxism

Jaw Pain: Persistent discomfort in the jaw muscles or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can signal bruxism.

Headaches: Morning headaches are a common side effect of teeth grinding.

Tooth Damage: Worn, chipped, or cracked teeth can result from prolonged grinding.

Tooth Sensitivity: Enamel erosion from bruxism can make teeth more sensitive to temperature changes.

Sleep Disturbances: Bruxism can interrupt sleep, causing fatigue and contributing to overall health issues.

Who Is at Risk?

Bruxism affects both adults and children, and while the exact cause isn’t fully understood, it’s often linked to:

Stress and Anxiety: One of the leading triggers for bruxism is stress. Individuals experiencing high levels of stress or anxiety are more likely to develop the condition.

Sleep Disorders: People with sleep apnea or other sleep disorders are at higher risk of bruxism.

Lifestyle Factors: Excessive caffeine, alcohol consumption, and smoking are also associated with an increased risk.

Medications and Health Conditions: Certain medications, like antidepressants, and conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, have been linked to bruxism.

Tips for Managing Bruxism

Visit Your Dentist: Regular dental checkups can help identify the early signs of bruxism and prevent further damage.

Wear a Night Guard: A custom-made night guard can cushion the teeth, inhibit grinding and prevent damage while you sleep.

Manage Stress: Practicing stress-relief techniques like meditation, yoga, or therapy can reduce teeth grinding.

Limit Caffeine and Alcohol: Reducing intake of stimulants, especially before bed, can lower the chances of teeth grinding during sleep.

Exercise Regularly: Physical activity helps release built-up tension, which may decrease clenching or grinding.

Botulinum Toxin Treatment: Most often used for anti-wrinkle treatments this is a very effective way to reduce the action of your muscles of mastication which will reduce the ability to grind.

Conclusion

Bruxism Awareness Week is about more than just teeth—it’s about your overall health and well-being. By understanding the signs, causes, and treatments for bruxism, you can protect your smile and improve your quality of life. Let’s use this week to raise awareness, seek solutions, and support those affected by this often overlooked condition.

When it comes to maintaining a bright, healthy smile, your choice of toothpaste plays a crucial role. At Y Bont Faen Dental Centre, we believe that fluoride toothpaste is one of the most effective tools in your dental care arsenal. But what exactly makes fluoride so beneficial, and why should it be a staple in your daily routine? Let’s dive into the science and benefits of fluoride toothpaste.

What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in various water sources, certain foods, and the earth’s crust. For decades, fluoride has been recognized for its ability to prevent tooth decay, which is why it’s commonly added to public water supplies and dental care products like toothpaste and mouthwash.

How Does Fluoride Work?

Fluoride works in two primary ways to protect your teeth:

1. Strengthening Tooth Enamel: The outer layer of your teeth, known as enamel, is the first line of defense against tooth decay. Fluoride strengthens enamel by helping to remineralize it, making it more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in your mouth.

2. Preventing Tooth Decay: Fluoride helps to slow down or even reverse the early stages of tooth decay. It does this by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria in your mouth and encouraging the remineralization of your enamel.

Why Choose Fluoride Toothpaste?

Here are some compelling reasons why fluoride toothpaste should be your go-to choice:

– Proven Effectiveness: Countless studies have shown that fluoride toothpaste significantly reduces the risk of tooth decay. This is why fluoride is endorsed by dental associations worldwide.

– Daily Protection: Every time you brush with fluoride toothpaste, you’re giving your teeth a mini-treatment that helps protect against decay. This is especially important after meals when acids from food and drinks can weaken your enamel.

– Safe for All Ages: Fluoride toothpaste is safe for adults and children when used as directed, be careful to not let children swallow to much.

Tips for Using Fluoride Toothpaste Effectively

To get the most out of your fluoride toothpaste, follow these simple tips:

– Brush Twice a Day: Make sure to brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day, ideally after breakfast and before bedtime.

– Use the Right Amount: Adults should use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, while children under six should use a smaller, grain-of-rice-sized amount and under three’s use a smear.

– Spit, Don’t Rinse: After brushing, spit out the excess toothpaste but avoid rinsing your mouth with water. This allows the fluoride to stay on your teeth longer, providing more protection.

– Pair with Regular Dental Visits: While fluoride toothpaste is powerful, it’s not a substitute for professional dental care. Be sure to visit us at Y Bont Faen Dental Centre regularly for check-ups and cleanings.

Feel free to contact Y Bont Faen Dental Centre to schedule an appointment or learn more about our dental services. We look forward to helping you keep your smile spectacular for life!

1. Sugary Snacks and Drinks
– Fizzy drinks and Sports Drinks: High in sugar and acid, these beverages can erode tooth enamel and lead to cavities.
– Sweets and Ice Cream: Sticky and sugary treats like gummy candies, caramel, and even ice cream can linger on your teeth, providing a breeding ground for bacteria and plaque.

2. Citrus Fruits
– Lemons, Oranges, and Grapefruits: While nutritious, the high acid content in citrus fruits can erode enamel if consumed in excess. Rinse your mouth with water after eating citrus to minimize the acid’s effect.

3. Dried Fruits
– Raisins and Dried Apricots: Although they might seem healthy, dried fruits are sticky and high in sugar, which can cling to teeth and cause decay.

4. Alcohol
– Wine and Cocktails: Alcohol can dry out your mouth, reducing saliva production and increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Fruit juices and alcohol also often contain those harmful sugars! Darker drinks like red wine can also stain your teeth.

Tips for Protecting Your Teeth This Summer

1. Moderation is Key: Enjoy your favorite treats in moderation to reduce the risk of damage to your teeth.
2. Rinse and Brush: After consuming sugary or acidic foods and drinks, rinse your mouth with water and wait 30 minutes before brushing to protect your enamel.
3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your mouth clean and maintain healthy saliva levels.
4. Choose Healthy Alternatives: Opt for healthier snacks like fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts to satisfy your cravings without harming your teeth.
